CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The three-day People's Literary Festival is set to kick off Thursday with several events taking place across the city of Corpus Christi.
The event, formerly known as the People's Poetry Festival, first began nine years ago.
Sarah K. Lenz serves as the chair of the People's Literary Festival. She says the event brings together a community of readers and writers who are eager to celebrate and learn more about their craft.
"One of our biggest beliefs, the People's Literary Festival, is that literature should be accessible to all. Not only access but to be able to enjoy it, hear it read. but also, to be able to create it. Literature connects people. It helps us to feel less lonely.
This year, the event has expanded to include all genres of literature and even some friendly competition.
It will include poetry readings-- readings of short stories-- and creative writing workshops.
"We have a couple competitive elements. we have a Haiku 'death match,' which is like slam poetry but in Haiku."
Thursday's events began at Del Mar College at 11:00 a.m.
More events are scheduled to take place at TAMU-CC and all Saints Episcopal Church Friday and Saturday. For the full schedule of events, you can check out the festival's website here.
