CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Tuesday marked the first day of early voting for the March primary elections.
Several local candidates are vying for your vote in the race for Nueces County commissioner Pct. 1.
3NEWS asked each candidate what they see as the biggest challenges facing the county and what they would like to see done about the issues.
Republican challenger Rachel Caballero believes the proposed ammonia plant for Calallen and Robstown is a concern.
"There's a proposed ammonia plant coming in Calallen and Robstown right now that the public is just been made aware of and we're definitely trying to keep that from being built so close to our communities," Caballero said.
Current city council member and Republican challenger Mike Pusley sees the biggest challenge being the County's budget.
"They had a touch budget this year," Pusley said. "They'll have another one this coming year I'm sure. And that's going to be the number one issue, and so to look at that I've already acquired a copy of the budget from last year. And going through that and talking with the county judge and some of the other commissioners about what their expectations are for the coming year."
Newcomer Democratic challenger Jessie Molina believes recent local healthcare changes are a big challenge for the county.
"One of the biggest challenges I believe is the healthcare," Molina said. "As the voters are aware the split of the city and the county health department, you know, we need to make sure that these services are being met."
Finally, incumbent and Democratic challenger Robert G. Hernandez said the county is facing multiple challenges and the real challenge will be how to fund them all.
"We got to put a new roof on the jail and the courthouse and we got to figure out how to do that," Hernandez said. "So we've got a lot of challenges up ahead of us and I know for sure we can't keep going to the taxpayers all the time asking them for more money, so we need to be a little bit more frugal."
