Businessman Eric Cantu beat fellow businessman Albert Carrillo III to take over the Dist. 3 city council seat.
The seat was left vacant by former councilman Roland Barrera, who challenged Solomon Ortiz Jr. to be the Democratic Texas House Dist. 34 candidate and later ran for an at-large city council seat.
Cantu told 3NEWS his priority, among others, is public safety.
"We need more police officers, firefighters and paramedics in Corpus Christi," he said.
He and Carrillo also said they'd vote "no" to the Inner Harbor Desalination Project.
"And again, I don't have all the facts, I'm not seeing apples for apples," Carrillo said. "I need to see it all."
Digital director Ana Tamez and digital content producer Mia Valdez contributed to this developing story. 3NEWS will provide updates as they come available.
