CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Officials with the Corpus Christi Independent School District gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Southeast Middle School.
CCISD Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez said the new campus, which will be located along Starry Road will help the district better meet the needs of today's students.
"It's cutting edge, it's going to have top-notch technology, stressing the arts. Drama, band, choir," Hernandez said.
The new campus is set to open along with the new Hamlin Middle School in August of 2025.
The superintendent said that due to the recent growth in the area, there was a dire need for the additional campus.
"It is going to help alleviate any overcrowding in of the other schools, particularly Kaffie," Hernandez said. "Kaffie and the new middle school here will feed into Veterans Memorial."
The new middle school falls in the presiding area of Corpus Christi District 5 Councilman Gil Hernandez. He said that he is also noticing new development in the area.
"Now the growth for us had to do with the streets," Hernandez said. "Yorktown, the expansion, the widening of Yorktown to accommodate more traffic because of the growth in those areas."
He said that development won't stop there.
"And then there's going to be more development around the schools, for housing and businesses," Hernandez said. "That are coming as well. I mean that's further down in the future."
Now the construction of the campus was made a possibility by the 2022 Bond. Hernandez says that the district is already working to inform parents about new boundary lines.
