CCPD: Captain Denny Asbury retires after nearly 4 decades

Captain Asbury began his career in 1985 and graduated from the 40th Police Academy. He oversaw the Crime Reduction Unit, Internal Affairs and other departments.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — After 39 years of dedicated service to the citizens of Corpus Christi, Captain Denny Asbury is retiring.

The department posted the announcement to social media at 9 a.m. on Thursday, thanking the nearly four-decade veteran for his years of service. 

Captain Asbury began his career in 1985 as part of the 40th graduating class Police Academy. He served as a patrol officer before being promoted to the role of a senior officer in 1988. He also served as a field training officer before transferring to the Criminal Investigation Division as an investigator in January of 1993.

Asbury was featured among 3NEWS' coverage in August 2021 when the department began a community engagement push called "Meet Your CCPD," a campaign that aimed to showcase the diversity among CCPD's personnel. Asbury was serving as the captain of the organized crime unit at the time, 

In April of 2007, the Austin-born officer was promoted to Captain, where he served as the Uniform Division’s executive officer and as a district captain. Captain Asbury also supervised the following units: Crime Reduction Unit, Internal Affairs, the Inspections Unit, the Gang Unit, the Criminal Investigation Division, the Organized Crime and Internet Crimes Against Children Unit and his current assignment is the Captain over the Narcotics/Vice Investigation Division.

The department announced this morning that Lieutenant Emily Perez will be promoted to the rank of Captain on Friday. Senior Officer Mariah Haywood will be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.
