Police say it does not matter if they are open or closed, you will be cited if you are caught with fireworks in your possession

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Police Department is ramping up efforts to keep the city safe this Fourth of July holiday week.

At a news conference held Monday afternoon, 3NEWS learned of some of the new initiatives in place to help make that possible, they include additional patrols of our area beaches and downtown where the "Mayor's Big Bang" celebration will happen Thursday evening.

A no-tolerance for DWI's will be enforced along with a no-tolerance policy on fireworks.

"We're gonna take a no-tolerance policy on any kind of fireworks. It does not matter if they are open or closed, you will be cited if you are caught with fireworks in your possession," said CCPD Captain Timothy Frazier.

Beach operations will also be in place starting Thursday through Sunday. More than 200 officers are expected on the island, some of them even certified drone operators' to help quickly respond to situations and gets eyes on them even faster.

"Such as a drowning, reported drowning, a lost child, or maybe a fight in-progress, something like that, where we have to locate victims quickly. We'll have drone operators out there to assist us which is very helpful," said Bradley Pici, Captain of Logistics for Beach Planning.
