CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A peaceful protest took place Wednesday morning outside of the Corpus Christi Regional Transportation Authority Staples Center where protesters spoke against the bars that the transportation system has installed on its bus benches to keep homeless community members from resting on them.
Volunteer with the Vulnerable Communities Defense League, Mariah Boone, and other protest supporters said the feature is hostile and contributes to the criminalization of individuals who may be homeless, violating their civil rights.
"I think we can be a community that doesn't look away, that tries to actually solve problems rather than making things harder for people who are already suffering," Boone said.
She said she hopes that residents can support and help those experiencing homelessness, rather than oppress them.
