CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — It's pretty toasty out there but with cooler temperatures still ahead of us, you'll wanna look up to see if you spy any birds of prey because we are currently in peak migration season.
Many witnessed the birds migrating in our area at the "HawkWatch" Celebration of Flight Festival.
The event is taking place through the weekend and has lots of activities for everyone at the Hazel Bazemore County Park.
Saturday alone, over 109,000 migrating raptors passed through the Corpus Christi area.
"This area is huge for raptors because if you think about the topography or rather geography of the United States and North America, it kind of funnels birds right to Texas and so the birds get pushed, they don't want to fly over the water, they don't want to fly over areas that are not good for them so they come here," said Research Biologist and Banding Coordinator Jesse Watson.
There was something for everyone at the festival, there were many vendors present, merchandise you could purchase and food trucks.
Kirsten Elliot, the Development Communications Director for HawkWatch International told us more about the activities that were offered at the festival.
"HawkWatch International is selling some great bird merch, so are our friends at the Audubon Outdoor Club of Corpus Christi. We've got some beautiful native plants back behind us that are for sale and we've just got lots of things going on. We got activities for kids, they can dissect an owl pallet for free, there is really something for everyone," said Elliot.
