Centerpoint Chapel offers lunch to homeless Saturday

"When we leave here, we kind of feel like we've fed Jesus."

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Volunteers with Centerpoint Chapel were out Saturday morning offering meals to homeless members of our community.

The church makes food available for the homeless three to four times a week at Centerpoint, the Mother Theresa shelter, and in Flour Bluff.

Church members handed out sandwiches and oatmeal -- even dog food for pets -- as well as other necessities like water and toilet paper.

3News spoke with retired pastor Ralph Willis about how it felt to help those in need.

"We need to be the people we want the world to be, and we feel like we do that here. We leave here feeling good about what we've done," said Willis. "Some people say that perhaps we're enabling, and that may be true in some cases, but most of all, it's the smile we see when we hand them something to eat for the day."

The former pastor added that their commitment to helping the homeless in our community goes further than just providing meals.

"We're here in case they need spiritual guidance or prayer. We've done funerals. We're just here generally to help those less fortunate than us. Mother Theresa said when a photographer tried to get her to stop and take a picture she said, 'I'm busy right now feeding Jesus you'll have to wait." Willis continued, "When we leave here, we kind of feel like we've fed Jesus."

The organization is always looking for volunteers -- you can reach out to them on their website.
