CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The popular coach and longtime district employee, Chris Steinbruck, has been chosen as the new interim superintendent of Flour Bluff ISD.
3NEWS interviewed Steinbruck to discuss his role in leading the Hornets, who are currently midway through a successful season.
Flour Bluff parent Ashlyn Braswell said that Steinbruck was a role model for her when she was in school.
"Coach Steinbruck, whenever I was in school he was the most amazing teacher. He was an amazing coach so I really feel like there's no one better to be able to take over as superintendent," she said.
Alexcis Rsh, another Flour Bluff parent, said that hiring a qualified candidate should be a top priority in this situation.
"It's okay as long as other parents think it's ok. He's qualified and everything. And as long as the students like him and everything, that's what we're after," she said.
Steinbruck said he has his hands full and is ready to get to make a change in the Flour Bluff community.
"This is my third day but we've already hit the ground running and we've got to pull the team together and I've laid out my expectations for the team," he said. "Now we just need to do what we can to support our people to make this as smooth of a transition as possible."
The Hornets have a 4-2 record this season and are undefeated in district play. Some people were concerned that this record might be affected by Steinbruck taking on a new role.
"There's going to be more work that needs to be done on the weekend and for both jobs. And I got to work this past weekend making sure our football staff was prepared for this week's game," he said.
The coach will continue to oversee the high school football program throughout the season, while coach Clynt Elwood will assume the role of athletic director.
Steinbruck said that any funding shortages from the state can be overcome.
"Our local community supports the school district. And so being able to tap into resources that are here locally in Flour Bluff and North Padre Island and NAS Corpus Christi is going to be the key to making sure we have what we need to move this thing forward," he said.
Becoming superintendent was a part of Steinbruck's career plan, and he hopes the position will become permanent in the future.
The former superintendent, Velma Soliz-Garcia, formally notified the board of trustees of her intention to retire at the end of January and will continue to serve as an advisor until that time.
