CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Local submariners and veterans are a step closer to seeing a new tangible tribute to their service in Downtown Corpus Christi.
The Corpus Christi City Council approved a license agreement Tuesday to accept the donation of the decommissioned submarine USS City of Corpus Christi's sail to Sherrill Veterans Memorial Park.
The sail is the top part of the submarine. It is the last piece of the vessel to submerge.
The sail, which is being donated by a local group called City of CC SSN-705 Submarine Memorial, Inc., is expected to be acquired from the U.S. Navy within 24 months and will be installed in the north corner of the park at the corner of Cooper's Alley and South Shoreline Boulevard.
