CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — City officials gathered Monday at the Del Mar College Center for Economic Development to celebrate the completion the South Staples Street Project that began in February 2021.
The completed project includes upgraded traffic signals, as well as upgrades to the streets storm water, wastewater and water systems.
Seven RTA bus stops were also reconstructed with new concrete shelter pads.
The $13.4 million project was originally supposed to be complete by May 2023 but crews ran into construction delays finishing in Dec. 2023.
Council member of District 2, Sylvia Campos, said the completion of that stretch of road was a long time coming.
"I've been waiting a lifetime," Campos said. "I've lived here all my life and I've always asked 'When, when, when will we ever get it done?' And I'm happy to say that today is the day officially that we can say we did it Corpus. We did it for you, for the people"
