City of Sinton advises proper disposal of yard clippings following heavy rains

Not cutting your lawn is a violation of a city ordinance in Sinton, along with blowing grass clippings into the street.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — While a freshly cut lawn is a summer staple to many, the City of Sinton is advising residents to mow their lawn and not blow clippings into the street.

Sinton City Manager John Hobson said that he wants residents to understand how disposing yard clippings into the street can have a domino effect on the city's drainage system.

"We're seeing tall grass throughout the city right now, a lot of places are still too wet to mow, including some city parks -- we're being a little more lenient toward that -- but as we dry out we're asking residents to go ahead and get their lawns mowed," Hobson said.

Sinton resident Chris Perez said that he was cutting the yard for a good portion of the evening. He said that it's hard work that shouldn't be underestimated.

"I'd say a yard will take about an hour and a half depending on how big it is; this is like two lots it looks like," he said.

But for Sinton residents like Rico, who made cutting lawns a side hustle, and edge-up is no big deal.

"I got off from work and I noticed my grass was tall. I just cut it last week, and it had grew throughout the rain," he said.

His advice for his fellow residents who do make the decision to to tackle their yards in the heat is quite simple.

"When you blow the grass, don't blow it out to the street, you got to blow it up on top of your property. Same thing on the side walks. Whatever you cut, keep it on your property," Rico said.

Hobson told 3NEWS that not cutting your lawn is a violation of the city ordinance, along with blowing grass clippings into the street. He said that the social media post, is a friendly reminder to residents before any enforcement action is taken.
