CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Some noticeable upgrades might be coming to a city park near you that would include thousands of dollars that will be spent to improve neighborhood park locations throughout the city.
The upgrades to the city's parks are slated to begin in February unless the weather creates any issues.
It includes a number of additions including new playground equipment but there is one feature that had a Corpus Christi residents pretty excited about, pickleball!
"Pickleball is like three sports in one, the court is as big as a badmiton court," said player Sara Nesta.
As its popularity grows, so does the need for more places to play.
Parker Park in Flour Bluff will soon provide that new option.
Nesta said it's a game that keeps her moving.
"That's going to be awesome, going to be beneficial cause now here in Flour Bluff, they will have two different places to play pickle ball beside the high school tennis courts," Nesta said.
Located off of Waldron Road next to the Flour Bluff Police sub station, Parker Park is among several other locations across the city slated for more improvements.
City Council member Dan Suckley described what improvements will be made at the park in the district 4, the district he represents.
"We are going to take one of the tennis courts here at Parker Park, the tennis courts will be renovated but we are going to turn one of the courts into two pickleball courts," Suckely said.
Other park upgrades include new playgrounds at Hans Sutter Park off Ennis Joslin, Wooldridge Park, and Casa Linda Park on Norton street.
You can find the full list here.
But by far the biggest additions are in store for Parker Park.
"The biggest one is the dog park," Suckley said. "So a portion of this undeveloped green space out there is going to be turned into a dog park. One thing about this park, you can see some of the mature trees we have and those are going to be left for the portion that is going to be repurposed into the dog park we'll have some natural shade."
Another big improvement project Suckley is looking forward to, is the future development of Commodores Park on Padre Island. A recent survey shows what residents want to see there.
"Pool facility, they asked for gym space, pickleball courts were on there, and there was a nature preserve that was important to the folks out there," Suckley said. "That process is moving ahead and in the next 30 days or so we'll have some community engagement, we will be able to narrow down what ."
