What city pools will be available after the summer?

While some pools are closing for the rest of the year, a brand new heated pool plans to open this fall.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The summer session for the City of Corpus Christi's public swimming pools ended August 11 — well for most of them that is.

Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Director Robert Dodd said a few pools are available to the public for the winter season and even with an additional location on the way.

"Collier Pool and Natatorium are going to be open during the winter months and they're heated," Dodd said. "You know if it gets cold in November and December people are able to swim, either do their exercise, lap swim or open swim as well."

Although the City is closing the door to a few local pools for the second half of the year, a tentative date of Oct. 4 has been set for the ribbon cutting of the Bill Witt Aquatic Center.

According Dodd, this aquatic center may be the newest year-round pool.

He also told 3NEWS about opportunities the new pool will bring to our community

"There's going to be some opportunity for some programming out there," Dodd said. "You know whether it be some schools going out there to use the lap swim or you know some club teams going out there to use that as well."

Aquatics Program Manager Bonney Maurer told 3NEWS we're ending the summer aquatics season with zero deaths.

"Great parenting, keeping track of our kids; it's lots and lots of training for all of our staff, which is ongoing," she said. "Not only do we do lifeguard training, we do ongoing in services to make sure that training is up to date and fresh and everybody is mission ready."

Maurer said despite the good news, it's important to not let your guard down.

"One of the most dangerous times of a year is at the end of a summer season," she said. "So we are coming into Labor Day, so we all have to stay vigilant and on top game."
