City's Hurricane Beryl sandbag distribution runs out an hour in Friday

Supplies were brought in from Houston to be able to hold this event.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The city of Corpus Christi ran out of sandbags a little after an hour after distribution started Friday.

Hurricane Beryl's potential effects on Corpus Christi and the Coastal Bend had people lined up in their vehicles outside the City Service Center on Ayers Street near Holly Road before daylight.

Corpus Christi Public Works Assistant Director Gabriel Hinojosa said by 9:10 a.m., the facility was out of the 10,000 pre-filled bags it had available, with vehicle lines backed up all the way to Holly Road.

Hinojosa said ahead of the distribution to learn about how the city prepared to distribute tens of thousands of sandbags.

The city actually partnered with the city's Emergency Operations Center to bring even more sandbags to Friday's distribution.

"We actually bought out all the sandbags in Corpus, so they were able to get us another 10,000 from Houston," Hinojosa said. "We actually had to get them transported yesterday."

Friday marks the city's fourth sandbag distribution this year. On Wednesday, they gave out 14,000 sandbags. An additional 10,000 sandbags were distributed during two weekend events prior.

Friday's event will be held at the City Service Center, located at 5352 Ayers St. It will take place from 8 a.m.-7 p.m., or until all bags are gone.
