CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Catholics across the world celebrated Ash Wednesday in addition to Valentine's Day 2024.
Over at the Corpus Christi Cathedral a special mass was held with Bishop Michael Mulvey delivering the sign of the cross with ashes.
The mass began at noon at the Corpus Christi Cathedral and invited parishioners to honor the beginning of lent, an ancient tradition of fasting, prayer and acts of giving for 40 days. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and lasts until the day before Easter.
Mulvey told 3NEWS that Ash Wednesday is a time for Catholic Christians to repent and reaffirm their belief in the gospels.
"It's a time of really re-examining ourselves, looking at ourselves, and being called—as I said in the homily earlier today—being called back to our original self," Mulvey said.
The bishop said the ashes stand as a symbol to help Christians remember to turn away from sin and to find their true self in Jesus Christ and the gospel.
