CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Heated discussions took place at the City of Corpus Christi Library Advisory Committee meeting on Tuesday.
3NEWS was at the meeting, where a new chair and vice chair were voted in.
Pat Craig and Carrie Moore were voted in as chair and vice chair respectively, but not before some heated words between Corpus Christi American Federation of Teachers President Nancy Vera, who was in the audience, and one citizen who spoke during public comment.
"They should not be published or pushed by public officials or school teachers," he said. "This is something that those children will learn about later, and so this is just my opinion."
Around 20 people spoke about the library board's change in leadership Tuesday.
None of those public speakers were in favor of banning books, but wanted what they considered sexually graphic books to be harder for young people to check out.
"I'm being told to trust librarians," one woman said. "And I want to be able to trust that it's not going to be graphic porn."
Moore served as interim board chair before being elected vice chair. She said the controversy was overblown.
"I think this is much ado about nothing. We're an advisory board -- just like the airport committee or anybody else," she said.
Board member Alice Upshaw Hawkins said members of the community can rest assured that the library will be run properly.
"There was a lot of talk about banning books and pornographic material being pushed off on students," she said. "And that is something that I would like to just debunk. Nobody pushes anything off on children."
Tuesday's meeting was rescheduled from Dec. 5 because there was no process in place to hold the election for the committee's chair and vice chair following the appointments of new committee members.
