CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect that while two Corpus Christi Police Department officers responded to the call and are on administrative leave, only one officer fired at Johnson.
Friends and family gathered at the O'Reilly's Auto Parts parking lot Monday evening to remember Dwayne Johnson and make sure their calls for justice are heard.
The 18-year-old was shot by police responding to an "assault in progress" at The Ranch dancehall in the early morning hours Sunday. According to CCPD, as the officers approached, Johnson produced a gun over the assault victim, who was lying on the ground, prompting an officer to shoot him.
The community showed an outpouring of love for the teen who was just weeks shy of celebrating his 19th birthday.
Those who knew Johnson came together near where he was shot on Everhart Road and Burney Drive to offer each other comfort and support through the tragic loss.
His mother pleaded to the community and asked anyone with video of the incident to share it and give their family the answers they need.
Others who have also lost loved ones spoke out to those who gathered.
"My heart goes out to all of us, not just one person, all of us because it affects the community," one resident said. "It's just not one person it's affecting, it affects all of us."
Residents told 3NEWS they are now working to organize a peace walk for the community.
