CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — After many years of waiting, the green light has been given to begin construction on the new Bob Hall Pier on Friday.
The 'Notice to Proceed' starts the clock for the contractor to finish the pier within 460 days, and if they don't complete it in that timeframe they will be penalized.
Nueces County Commissioner Brent Chesney said starting next week, the contractor will meet with the project manager to create a construction timeline.
"A schedule that will show everybody when they're going to put stuff out there and when will things happen," Chesney said.
Nueces County Coastal Parks Director Scott Cross said locals will begin seeing activity in the area within the next 30 days.
"So they'll start moving in whatever equipment they need to establish their laydown yard and start to build their rail system," Cross said.
If the project isn't finished within the 460 calendar days as part of the agreement between the County and the contractor, the contractor can be penalized.
"Liquidated damages the County can seek for every day they go over time the allocated time," Cross said.
Chesney said this project has been in the works for a long time but once it's completed, it will be worth it.
"And we're very excited to keep this thing moving forward," he said. "The contract is signed, the funds are obligated, there's no turning back now."
By December of next year, residents should see the pier fully built.
