CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — To help keep us safe this holiday season, especially as Christmas approaches, the Corpus Christi Fire Department conducted a tree safety demonstration at Del Mar College's West Campus.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 160 home fires annually that start with a Christmas tree.
CCFD Assistant Fire Chief Billy Belyeu said that the demonstration applies to artificial trees as well.
"Artificials are just as susceptible to fires," he said.
The safety presentation on Wednesday aimed to highlight the importance of keeping holiday trees hydrated. When decorating trees, be aware of potential fire risks, including nearby heat or light sources, dried-out trees, and worn or broken electrical cords.
