CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City of Corpus Christi provided an update on the status of Barisi Village and other TIRZ-funded projects throughout the Coastal Bend area.
Assistant City Manager Heather Hurlbert said that, in order for the project to move forward, there were details still needing attention from Nueces County.
"My understanding is that it was on their last agenda, but they did not bring it out of executive session. So we are just waiting on that so we can go forth with our executive session," she said.
Hurlbert said the project, which is valued between $800 million and $1 billion, will bring significant economic prosperity to the area.
"Will really help with the blight in the area, it helps reactivate that area. It creates a lot of multi-family housing along with some single-family housing," she said.
When it comes to other projects in the city, Hurlbert said there is a lot residents can look forward to seeing take shape.
"The downtown TIRZ, we invested that money back into downtown, between business development and infrastructure. The TIRZ number two we just reauthorized for another 20 years," she said.
Nueces County Precinct 4 Commissioner Brent Chesney said this development is long overdue for the area.
"Those people in that area have waited for something positive to happen for years, 10 years. They have been patient, this is all about those citizens and what they need to get this done, period," he said.
And for those worried about any tax issues, Hurlbert said there is no need to be concerned.
"TIRZ does not increase taxes, it does not put an extra tax on there. This is all under the cities regular tax rate," he said.
