Corpus Christi Marina Advisory Committee concerned about sales tax diversion to convention center

The Marina Advisory Committee references several studies and reports from the Army Corps of Engineers and the county, all indicating the need for further work.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Marina Advisory Committee has questions for city leaders after sending an email to all council members regarding Proposition A.

The group expressed their belief that the city should not divert sales tax dollars from the seawall to fund the convention center. They emphasized that several issues persist in our storm protection system, requiring immediate attention.

Last month, the group emailed all City Council members, with a message that included:

The committee was also very discouraged by the hurried approach to this project. No one on this committee has been briefed until now nor has advice been requested.

Corpus Christi Assistant City Manager Heather Hulbert said that the city could have done more to inform the Marina Advisory Committee.

"We probably could have briefed the Marina advisory board maybe a little bit earlier," she said.

Hurlbert said that the marina has only recently started benefiting from the Seawall Fund.

"For basically, the first 20 years that the seawall fund has been in existence the primary use with the seawall structure as we consider it now," she said.

The Marina Advisory Committee references several studies and reports from the Army Corps of Engineers and the county, all indicating the need for further work.

Corpus Christi District 3 Council Member Roland Barrera stated that the city has made decades-long investments in the seawall.

"Since I have been on the council we have already been through two hurricanes, and the largest hurricane that we've had in my lifetime with Hurricane Celia," he said. "At that time the seawall was what 30 or 40 years old and we didn't have to repair it for another 30 years.  Back then it was reinforced with wood, today it's reinforced with steel so we have a much stronger seawall."

Barrera said that the council wouldn't overlook the seawall, emphasizing the need to invest in the convention center to boost business attraction.
