'We're ready to go' | Corpus Christi's Mayor Guajardo talks Beryl preparations

Mayor Paulette Guajardo discussed Corpus Christi's plan of action and what you can do to prepare for the storm.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Mayor Paulette Guajardo joined Brian Burns in the 3NEWS studio to discuss preparations that the city has been undergoing to get ready for storm Beryl.

City officials have been coordinating efforts to help people prepare for the storm but Mayor Guajardo said that staying informed should be a top priority.

"Right now the message is to be prepared and to make certain, first of all, that you are getting your information from a reliable source," she said.

Guajardo said that the city is ready for whatever storm Beryl might bring.

"We are very prepared. We are ready to go, regardless of what hits, we are ready to go," Guajardo said. "Our Emergency Operations Center is up and running, it's open and we'll operate that to the next level probably tomorrow afternoon."

According to Guajardo, the city has state resources available and support ranging from the county, to the RTA to the Army Corps of Engineers.

"I received a call from Governor Greg Abbott today and he lent his support and we have state resources here that are going to be very, very critical if and should we need them," Guajardo said. "That's a big deal because we need to be sure that we are ready, we prepare for the worst."

The mayor said that local officials will gather Sunday for a news briefing at noon to further discuss the storm and make decisions regarding evacuating low-lying areas.

"Tomorrow we will have a news briefing at noon and then we will move forward accordingly," she said.

What can you do to help your self? Guajardo suggests making a plan. Know where your insurance paperwork is and check in on your neighbors to make sure that they are okay.

"If you plan to leave, make certain you know what route you're taking and when you're leaving," she said. "If you don't, then make certain you know what you have in terms of your insurance paperwork. Do you have your flood insurance? Do you have your windstorm insurance? And where that paperwork is and check on your neighbors. You know we are a caring community and I know we all care for one another but don't hesitate to go next door, across the street and check on your neighbors and make sure they are okay."
