To the men and women who serve our community, putting their lives on the line to keep us safe is just another day on the job.
On Thursday, Corpus Christi police officers and employees were recognized and awarded for their hard work and outstanding efforts.
Among the group of winners were three senior officers. They received life-saving awards for specific incidents this past year.
Sr. Officer Brandon Cordell said they never expect to be awarded for their work.
"It's a great honor. We don't get recognition or pats on the back too often in this profession," Cordell said. "It makes you feel good. It makes you feel like what you're doing out there really does count."
Cordell was recognized for saving a man who overdosed last year. He said saving lives is just a part of the job.
"There's probably not an officer in this department that hasn't done this time and time again," Cordell said.
Sr. Officer Michael Frakes said, like his colleagues, he doesn't think twice about putting his life in jeopardy to save someone else.
"It's really kind of euphoric to be recognized for this award," Frakes said. "If duty calls, that's what I'm here for."
Last year, Frakes was able to prevent a man from jumping off an overpass. It's a day he won't soon forget.
"I take a lot of joy in him saving another life and him seeing another day," Frakes said.
Sr. Officer Steven Rubellman also prevented a suicide. He said knowing he has the ability to save and change lives keeps him going.
