Corpus Christi secures state grant to fight homelessness, invites nonprofits to apply

Last year, Mission 911 CEO Tony Reyes said his organization received $50,000 from the homeless housing and services program grant.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City of Corpus Christi has received a grant from the state to help local organizations combat homelessness, and the city is actively looking for non-profit organizations to award that grant money to.

The Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs has granted the city over $270,000 to address homelessness, something that City Assistant Director of Planning and Community Development Jennifer Buxton said the city has been reaching out for.

"Anytime that we can bring additional resources to the community for providers to provide additional services, get more people into mental health care, into case management, rehab services, anytime we can do that , that's a good thing," she said.

Buxton said the city knows the money can make a difference, so they remain as flexible as the funding source allows them.

"We try not to put any additional requirements other than what the state asks for. That's our goal is to not put additional barriers on to the services and to make it as easy as possible for non profits to access to funds," she said.

Any nonprofit organization that helps combat homelessness and provides essential services is eligible to apply to receive some of that grant money. Those funds could assist local organizations such as Mission 911, which applied for the grant last year.

"That grant really came in handy for those individuals who were struggling in poverty," she said

Last year, Mission 911 CEO Tony Reyes said his organization received $50,000 from the homeless housing and services program grant.

"In that grant we were able to help people that were struggling," he said. "They wanted a new, different direction and they didn't have a place to stay so maybe we got them a hotel room. The majority of the money went to help people pay their rent or their utility bills so they wont be on the street."

The application for the grant money is currently open and will close on November 17. Interested nonprofits can visit the city's website to access the application.
