ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A crane reportedly collapsed in Downtown St. Pete late Wednesday night as Hurricane Milton made its way through Florida's coast.
St. Pete Fire Rescue says the crane collapsed in the area of the 400 Central Avenue building construction site.
Crews at the same time of the crane incident also responded to roof damage reported at Tropicana Field.
No injuries have been reported in either incident. First responders are doing damage assessments in both areas when conditions are safer.
Officials are asking the public to continue to shelter in place and avoid the area until
further notice.
Following the collapse, the developers released the following statement:
“We are grateful that no one was injured in the area, and that the only damage was to bricks and not to people,” said John Catsimatidis Sr., founder of Red Apple Real Estate and principal of the company that is sponsoring the development.
According to developers, St. Pete officials will work with them to inspect the area to "determine next steps with the debris on the ground."
The building itself is reportedly in "good condition."
“The 400 Central building is in good condition, but we are conducting further inspections,” Catsimatidis said. “We expect work on the building to recommence as soon as possible.”
