A/C technicians see boom in business due to dangerous heat

An influx of customers have called in with cooling concerns as heat index values, humidity and air temperature lean into summer-like heat.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — High humidity levels, like the ones we've seen nonstop, can cause condensation build-up which can result in your air conditioner leaking and open the door to an even bigger problem of mold growing in your air ducts.

While humidity is only a piece to this puzzle, high air temperatures fight against your cooling safe haven as well, which at many times, can put a cap on how low your thermostat can go.

"Air conditions cool 20 degrees different from your outdoor temperature for what you're going to have indoor so, if you got a 100-degree day and it's 80 degrees in the house, the air condition is actually working," co-owner of Alpha A/C & Heating Orlando Perales said. "And that's where your R-value of the house comes into play of what the air conditioner is going to do for you,"

Since every house and unit is different it's important to remember that the 20-degrees temperature change may be higher, or can also struggle and remain lower, depending on the size of your house, air conditioner unit and how the conditions are outside.

The actual location of where your A/C unit is in your home, also matters.

Once you add up how hot temperatures can reach in your attic, where many of these conditioners are placed at, the heat index, or feels-like temperature, becomes more of a concern -- especially for home owners.

"That heat index is so high, that sun is beaming down on those rooftops," Perales said. "Your attics are 123 degrees and we're trying to keep 76.74 degrees inside. It's really hard on the air conditions."

Perales told 3NEWS that last year was pretty hectic for his business with record-breaking heat. He expects the same this year as we have already seen record-breaking heat and are not even officially in summer yet.

Some problems may be reduced by not over working the thermostat.

Perales suggests turning the thermostat up a few degrees at night, which can make all the difference on the wear and tear of your A/C unit.

3NEWS reached out to several other A/C businesses around town, and all of them were too busy to meet due to such high demand.
