CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Del Mar College's "dual-credit" also known as "dual enrollment program" is a partnership that allows high school students to take college level classes and earn credit.
DMC's dual-credit program is currently offered at 49 high schools, including many rural schools throughout south Texas.
Since Jan. 1, a majority of those schools qualify for students to take the program's courses for free thanks to the passage of House Bill 8.
While the bill was limited to economically disadvantaged students, Del Mar College went beyond that to make sure that all students in dual-credit classes are able to do so free of charge.
Associate VP with Continuing Education at DMC Dr. Leonard Rivera shared what the waived fees will mean for high school students and their families.
"It saves parents a large amount of money, it gets the kids motivated, prepared to take the next step," said Rivera. "We orientate the students what to expect and what type of opportunities there are with respect to duel enrollment, if they want to take college courses to get them core complete."
Around 6,200 high school students benefit from Del Mar College's dual enrollment program each year.
