Design work for public boat launch in Flour Bluff, other public parks and rec projects included in 2024 Bond

Proposition B on the ballot is made up of 11 Parks & Rec projects combined at $37 million, including the design of the launch.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Do you know what's on your ballot?

There are 38 projects proposed in Bond 2024, 11 of those are related to the City's Parks & Recreation Department -- all of which can be done with the existing city property tax rate.

3NEWS spoke with Parks and Rec Director Robert Dodd to break down some of these projects taking place across all five voting districts, as well as the $37,650,000 price tag.

For starters, Dodd said there is $10 million going to the Oso Municipal Golf Course to replace its clubhouse.

"One of the other improvements that we're looking forward to is the Cole Park parking improvements," he said. "You know, that area gets so much traffic with our new amenities down there and the new playground and new splash pads. You know, something that -- it means a lot to the people of Corpus Christi is Cole Park. "

Another talker on the ballot, is the $5 million dollars being allotted to Commodores Park on the island, as well as $1 million going towards the design of a public boat ramp at Dimmit Pier in Flour bluff.

"When I got on council in early 2023, I brought to the attention of parks and rec staff that Flour Bluff, specifically, did not have any sort of public launch facility for boats, kayaks -- whatever it might be," said current Dist. 4 councilman Dan Suckley.

Suckley said that's why he made the recommendation to get this item on a future bond, which is now more relevant because of the recent privatization of Bluffs Landing Marina.

"The closing of Bluff's Landing, the marina part to people being able to launch out there was very frustrating for the community. Not only people that live in flour bluff or live on the south side that would, that would take their boats out there to launch, but visitors even are, are concerned about it," he said.

Suckley tells 3NEWS that, if passed, this money would go toward the boat launch's design and feasibility plan, getting the ball rolling.

"Then, after that point, you would have to identify where the funding would come from," he said. "I know, there are some grant opportunities that we've looked into that could help with the funding of constructing it."

Dodd and Suckley both said the $175-million Bond project for 2024 does not trigger an increase to our taxpayers.

"It's a win-win," Suckley said.
