DEVELOPING: 68-year-old bicyclist hit by driver on Whitecap and Aquarius early Friday morning

Emergency first responders were seen standing near a bike that had been split in half.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Police Department confirmed to 3NEWS that they are working a major traffic collision involving a bicyclist Friday morning. 

Preliminary information from the department states that officers believe the bicyclist was a 68-year-old man He has been taken to a local hospital with serious injuries after making an unsafe lane change and caused the accident.

An eyewitness told 3NEWS they observed the person they believe to be the driver remained at the scene, appearing visibly upset.

An eyewitness described seeing the witness appear to have been thrown several feet away from the bike.

A CCPD officer on scene told our 3NEWS crew that driver was an older woman. 

Part of traffic in the street is blocked off as traffic Unit investigators are enroute to the scene to gather more information. 

As of 10:30 a.m., there is still yellow tape up blocking off the scene, and several officers are in the area.
