CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Eric Cantu and Alberto Carillo III are running for election in District 3 of Corpus Christi's City Council race this November.

In an attempt to inform the Corpus Christi community better about local candidates, 3NEWS reached out to the Cantu and Carillo to ask their opinions on issues that are timely to voters. You can find their answers below.

Incumbent Roland Barrera is not running in this race, leaving the seat up for grabs between small-business owner Eric Cantu and business professional Albert Carrillo III.

Do you support the Inner Harbor Desalination Project?

No. I don’t support the Inner Harbor location but support Desalination to secure uninterruptible water supply for Corpus Christi. With the increasing demand for water in our growing city, we need a sustainable and reliable source of drinking water. It is crucial for ensuring the long-term viability of our community and economy.

What is the biggest thing the current city government currently does well?

The current city government has done an excellent job of building the culture of our community through initiatives like ArtWalk. These events not only celebrate our local artists and businesses but also foster a sense of community pride and engagement. By promoting cultural activities, the city enhances the quality of life for residents and attracts visitors, making Corpus Christi a vibrant place to live and work.

What is the biggest issue in Corpus Christi?

The biggest issue in Corpus Christi is our infrastructure. This includes properly fixing our streets with quality contractors and materials to ensure they are safe and durable. Additionally, we need to focus on securing a reliable water supply for our community and making necessary improvements across all aspects of our infrastructure. Investing in these areas is essential for supporting our growing population and enhancing the overall quality of life in Corpus Christi.

Do you support the Inner Harbor Desalination Project? (Please answer yes or no and then give your reasoning.)

I do not support the Inner Harbor Desalination Project. Here is why:

  • 1. Negative Environmental Impact: The process of desalination can harm marine ecosystems. Additionally, the discharge of brine (highly concentrated saltwater) back into the ocean can disrupt local marine environments and affect the salinity levels.
  • 2. Chemical Use: The desalination process often involves the use of chemicals for pretreatment and post-treatment of water, which can pose risks to the environment if not managed properly.
  • 3. Economic Concerns: The development of desalination plants can lead to conflicts over water rights, especially in regions where water is scarce. It can also create disparities between those who can afford the water and those who cannot.

What is the biggest thing the current city government currently does well?

  • 1. Community Engagement: The current council often prioritizes public involvement, hosting meetings and forums to gather citizen input on local issues and initiatives. This helps ensure that residents' voices are heard in decision-making.
  • 2. Economic Development: The council has worked to promote economic growth through initiatives that attract businesses and investment, supporting local job creation.
  • 3. Infrastructure Improvements: The current council has made improvements towards infrastructure, such as roads, and public transportation.
  • 4. Public Safety: The council seemingly has collaborated well with local law enforcement and emergency services.

What is the biggest issue in Corpus Christi?

From my observations, the biggest challenges are, an aging infrastructure, particularly roads and water systems, a need for economic diversification beyond the port industry, and improving access to quality healthcare; all while navigating potential budget constraints and the need to attract and retain talent in the city.
