HOUSTON — A Houston firefighter jumped into a chilly bayou Friday to rescue a tiny dog but the stubborn pup wasn't having it.
Visitors to the Houston Botanic Garden alerted staff to a dog stuck on the support of a pedestrian bridge. Staff members called the fire department and Stations 29 and 42 responded.
A firefighter jumped into Sims Bayou and swam to the Chihuahua. When he got close, the feisty little dog barked at him and nipped at his fingers. The firefighter tried to grab it, but the stubborn pooch turned around and dove into the bayou.
He swam after it and finally snagged it.
Even after the firefighter got the dog to dry land, it turned around and barked at him some more.
The pup was wrapped in a blanket and photos show a wide-eyed pooch in the arms of a smiling firefighter.
"We love knowing that everyone and everything in and around the Garden is in good hands with these trained community helpers on the job," read a post from the Houston Botanic Garden on Facebook.
It was not immediately known how the dog became stuck on the bridge, who owns it or what comes next for the pooch.
