Lomax Street closure disrupts nearby businesses as holiday shopping enters final push

20/20 Vintage owner Monica Ellison said she knows he work being done for the new hotel will eventually pay off, but she would have liked more notice.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Downtown is experiencing growing pains as the construction of a $30 million Homewood Suites hotel at the corner of Chaparral and Mesquite is creating headaches for neighboring small-business owners right as the Christmas shopping season ramps up.

20/20 Vintage store owner Monica Ellison said the city told her Friday that Lomax Street, which runs in front of her store, would close this week -- and again next week -- to do needed utility work for the new hotel being built across the street.

“I kind of feel like it was a blow to us," she said Tuesday.

Downtown Management District communications coordinator Daniela Campos said the organization is doing everything it can to promote 20/20 Vintage and the other businesses here who've had their street, and parking, taken away.

"Going on social media, really pushing them on our newsletter, and just letting the public know that they're still open they are still here," she said.

The sidewalk is still open, and there is parking along Mesquite and Chaparral when you can find it. There's even a parking lot behind these businesses.

"I know that, in the long run, it's going to help to generate revenue for Downtown Corpus Christi, for our community, and I'm 100 percent behind that," Ellison said.

She said she just wishes she'd been given more notice over the decision to close the street in front of her business during the final week of the Christmas shopping season.
