Coastal Bend Food Bank provides free diabetes program to rural areas

Through a hands-on program focusing on diabetes, the food bank is providing rural areas with access to free nutrition classes and support to manage diabetes.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi was once ranked among the fattest cities in Texas and although that number has decreased over the years, diabetes remains a major issue especially in rural areas.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30% of people living in Corpus Christi are dealing with diabetes and that number increases in rural areas.

"We do see higher rates in zip codes where residents may not have access to preventive care, nutrition and food," Public Health Director for the City of Corpus Christi Dr. Fauzia Khan said.

Dr. Khan said we are experiencing a high rate of obesity and diabetes in South Texas and that the need for diabetes education about grows as you go into smaller communities.

"People don't realize the impact food has on health, well being, in every aspect of our lives and our goal is to make sure we don't leave anyone behind," Coastal Bend Food Bank Community Register Dietician Shelby Pena said.

Through a hands-on program focusing on diabetes, the Coastal Bend Food Bank is providing rural areas with access to free nutrition classes and support to manage diabetes.

"In San Diego, [Texas], we actually offer the same program we have in house, at the San Diego Civic Center," Pena said. "And so, we're still offering that huge ongoing support."

San Diego resident Thelma Perez has had diabetes for 10 years and she said the program has helped her learn how to live with the illness better.

"It's changed in that my sugar readings have been lower and because of the way I eat," Perez said. "The way they teach us to eat. And they have been lowered and good. Even my blood pressure has been in a better standing."

Pena said they've received a positive feedback from the participants in the class, but they're still seeing a low number in registration.

"The need is there, but how do we get them to see this program is there to meet their need," Perez said. "And that is the problem."

The Diabetes Hands-On Program is completely free as long as your register ahead of time. The next session in San Diego begins May 26 and end on June 17.
