CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Republican candidate Adam Hinojosa has unseated Morgan LaMantia, the incumbent Democrat in the Texas State Senate District 27 seat.
3NEWS caught up with the Republican candidate Wednesday who shared what he believes helped him win this year's race.
"In 2022 I had to go at it mostly by myself, to prove the fact that it was winnable," Hinojosa said. "And when we went at it that brought in all the troops we had the backing this time, we had full backing of Lt. Governor Abbott, even President Trump who engaged with his endorsement in this race, and so, I believe all that made the difference."
The Corpus Christi-based businessman released a statement late Tuesday, saying the election results were 'nothing short of historic.'
One focus of Hinojosa's campaign was reaching undecided voters. The candidate spoke with 3NEWS in October, saying that's where he believed he'd find success.
"This is about partisan politics. This is about common sense, restoring common sense back into our governments, back into our schools; stopping the sexualization of our children, stopping the inflow of unvetted people into our country."
In the lead up to the election, LaMantia told 3NEWS she did not feel that her district would be flipped Republican.
She said at the time that South Texans vote for the candidate, not the party.
In a Facebook post released Wednesday afternoon, LaMantia thanked those who supported her campaign.
The Texas Senate District 27 seat serves six counties from South Texas all the way down to parts of the valley.
