CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Incumbent Gil Hernandez will remain in the Corpus Christi City Council District 5 seat. This is his fourth reelection.

District 5 includes much of the new growth on the Southside, covering everything south of Saratoga Boulevard and east of Weber Road, all the way to Oso Creek.

During the campaign period, both candidates expressed they wanted to improve city streets.

However, the two disagreed on where Corpus Christi should build a desalination plant.

Hernandez does not support the Inner Harbor Desalination Plant, but prefers the Harbor Island project instead.

"You can't just think about what we need here now," Hernandez said. "You got to think long term and what we will need 20, 30, 40 years down the road and I will think it will be a better solution as opposed to the Inner Harbor side."

Peña supports the Inner Harbor Desalination Plant and the Port's Harbor Island plan.

"If the permitting shows it's safe, and they want to take responsibility for saying it's safe, then I'm for it. We need the water," Peña told 3NEWS.
