CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The City of Falfurrias will be distributing sandbags Friday ahead of Hurricane Beryl -- which could possibly impact South Texas -- but homeowners won't be the only ones reaping the benefit.
Falfurrias residents who owe fines to the City have the chance to pay off their debt by helping fill sandbags!
The idea came from several city officials who saw the need for labor and turned it into a way to help the most vulnerable in the community.
"We're in a low-income community, so it's a very good way to get out of a ticket by helping those who cannot help themselves: the elderly, the people who are ill who cannot go out and sandbag their own bags," City of Falfurrias Public Affairs and Utilities Director Ramon Rodriguez said.
All Falfurrias residents with fines are welcome to take part, just head to the courthouse and tell the judge that you'd like to fill sandbags on Friday.
You can learn more by calling the city at (361) 325-2420 or by visiting falfurrias.us.
