CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — An elderly woman is dead after a house fire broke out on Morgan Avenue and 11th Street, just west of CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline late Wednesday.
Just after 11:30 p.m., Corpus Christi Fire Department crews and the Corpus Christi Police Department responded to a call for a residential structure fire.
Upon arrival, they found the house completely engulfed in flames.
CCPD did confirm one person was inside of the home at the time, and was later confirmed dead.
Police said the woman is believed to be 71 years old.
Officials described the home as a "total loss."
"We were very surprised to see something this involved at this time of day," said CCFD Capt. Jeff Durrwachter. "It surprised all of us that it got that far that fast. Our first concern was actually protecting the neighbor's house. The house was fully engulfed when we first saw it.
"So at that point, we're not worried so much about saving that structure as keeping the fire from spreading."
Fire crews were able to control the fire and protect the neighboring homes.
Officials described the home as a "total loss."
The identity of the person found dead inside of the home has not been released.
The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing.
