CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Fire Department wants to remind Coastal Bend residents to be extra cautious of what they plug in or light up in their homes as the city begins to experience cooler temperatures.
As the department wrapped up its fire safety week initiative, it said that when homeowners and apartment-dwellers use candles, they should be sure to place them on a sturdy surface where it will not burn or tip over.
They also want to remind people that it is important to keep those candles at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn. They said people should extinguish candles when they leave a room, their homes, and when they go to bed.
It is also important to keep children and pets away from lit candles, and people should consider using battery-operated flameless candles that are safer.
The fire department said that space heater safety is important to consider as we head into fall and winter weather. It is vitally important to remember to only plug space heaters directly into wall outlets.
Never plug them into an extension cord or power strip. People should place space heaters on a solid, flat surface and keep them and their electrical cords away from things that can burn, high-traffic areas, and doorways.
