CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Fire Department’s annual 'Fill the Boot' campaign is set to begin next week. The fundraising event takes place in partnership with the Muscular Dystrophy Association and raises money each year to help fund their mission of empowering people who live with neuromuscular disease to live longer, more independent lives.
In years past, the department raised more than $128,000-- the 4th largest amount collected in the nation by a fire department at the time.
"Fill the Boot is a special program that we get to be involved with," said Fire Chief Brandon Wade in a video posted to the department's social media.
"We're proud to be partners with this great event, raise money for the kids, not only to help find a cure for muscular dystrophy but also to help these kids go to camp where they can enjoy a time together and just be out and have fun."
Chief Wade says that residents will see firefighters standing on street corners all over town for the March fundraiser.
"You'll see us holding up the boot, "said Wade. "We'll take change, we'll take pennies, we'll take dollars."
The department said that every dollar adds up to help advance research for a cure and that their effort is just one an additional part of what firefighters do to serve the community.
