CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas —
For those looking for a more hands on experience at the Port Aransas boat festival, each year the festival holds a family boat build where groups can make their own wooden boats. This year the festival had their first ever all-women team, the Pink Shipwrights. Member Felicia Foster says it's an experience the team will remember for a long time.
"In February of this year, I was like 'Has there ever been an all-women boat build?' And they were like no. And I was like 'Well this year there's going to be one.'"
Pink Shipwrights consists of three generations of mothers and daughters. This was the team's first time trying their hands at boat building at the Port Aransas Wooden Boat Festival.
Foster says they chose the color pink to symbolize love, compassion and generosity and also in celebration of her sister becoming breast cancer free two months ago. The team consists of three generations of mothers and daughters.
With help from the Farley Boat Works staff, The Pink Boatwrights worked to get the boat out on the water by the end of Sunday's festivities. Foster says that her team's work caught the attention of people all around the festival.
"What's really interesting is we've had so many people come up like "We never thought we could build a boat but watching you guys build this in three days, we're like that's amazing!',” she said.
"That's what we're trying to tell our daughters as well, don't shy away from something because you don't know how to do it. Just get in there and get your hands dirty."
