CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Many gathered at the Richard M. Borchard Fairgrounds for the Sate of the County event that touched on the growth and development of Nueces County.
Last year, Nueces County ranked last, among other counties of its size, when it came to its general fund balance. Nueces County Precinct 4 Commissioner Brent Chesney said that while the balance is low, it's all part of the bigger picture.
"We have way lower tax rates than counties our size, and that's a good thing," Chesney said.
He said that finances have had to be shifted within the county to accommodate where its needed.
"We weren't able to increase our fund balance reserves last year, because we had a budget shortfall," he said. "We made $5 million in budget cuts."
While the county is still navigating how to bolster the budget, Chesney said there are alternatives.
"Well making cuts, that's one solution, not many governmental entities ever around here look at making cuts; that should always done," he said.
Nueces County Judge Connie Scott said that they are also looking to prioritize certain projects to better meet the demands of the tax payer.
"Using those grant funds to bolster the budget with our aging infrastructure, with our county buildings, with our courthouse that we have, with putting a new roof on," she said.
County officials did explain, that the county has no plans to raise taxes. Saying that commissioners are working to look at other avenues to add to the budget and secure future projects.
