CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — FBISD confirmed Wednesday that the school's Fine Arts Director Elizabeth Ortega-Ruiz assumed the role of head band director in the wake of the marching band's forfeiter from UIL competition in October.
The marching band was disqualified from its spot in that competition after a staff member discovered an ineligible student performed in the Region 14 5A contest.
Kristen Bily, executive director of communications for the district told 3NEWS that the former band director will take on an assistant position.
Bily said the situation has been difficult for the everyone involved, and the district is ready to move forward having learned from the experience.
"This has been a humbling experience that we absolutely learned from," Bily said, adding that the district has had to take steps to protect their staff and the student involved in the incident,
"Everyone within the Performing Arts division has handled it with grace and responsibility."
Ortega-Ruiz will maintain her role as interim band director until a replacement is found.
