TxDOT: Improvements coming to FM 624 in Calallen

The construction will include several improvements from Wildcat Drive to County Road 73.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A new road construction project on FM 624 in Calallen is in the works by the Texas Department of Transportation.

TxDOT spokesperson Rickey Dailey said FM 624 -- also known as Northwest Boulevard -- is one of the busiest streets in the area. He told 3NEWS the project will enhance safety and improve mobility for everyone on FM 624.

"The project aims to reduce the conflict points where crashes are most likely to occur and improve how people travel through the area," Dailey said.

The construction will include several improvements from Wildcat Drive to County Road 73.

"Include three travel lanes in each directions," Dailey said. "In addition, TxDOT proposes to provide a shared use of path on the south side of the road and a sidewalk on the north side of the road. And to add additional traffic signals in intersections and also to add a raised concrete median, a raised center median and also to install an underground storm sewer system."

The $35 million project will not begin construction until late 2025 and will take an estimated 18  months to complete.

Calallen ISD Superintendent Emily Lorenz said the project has raised concerns about students' safety since the construction will be right in front of Calallen High School. But she said the school district is working closely with TxDOT to provide correct information.

"To make sure they're well informed of when things are happening, when things are changing and the best routes to take," Lorenz said.

Dailey said this project is a huge investment for the community.

"That section of town is of Corpus and Calallen area is growing so we see these as needed improvements for safety and mobility," he said. "And we're happy to deliver this project for the folks."

After a public hearing Thursday, TxDOT is taking in consideration the community's suggestions and concerns.

Dailey said the community still has an opportunity to send in comments about the project by going to txdot.gov and search "FM 624 hearing." Comments have to be submitted online by Monday, Sept. 16.
