Galveston police: Driver charged with DWI after car goes off Pier 21, three missing now accounted for and safe

GPD identified the driver as 21-year-old Caleb Joseph Hayes of Dickinson. He is charged with driving while intoxicated, according to police.

GALVESTON, Texas — Galveston police say a vehicle drove off a pier into potentially 30 feet of water early Sunday morning.

This happened on Pier 21, which is at the intersection of 21st Street and Harborside Drive.

Police said one person managed to escape the vehicle and told officers there may have been three other people inside. Galveston Police Department Public Information Officer Kurt Koopman later told KHOU 11 the other three were not in the car are now accounted for and safe.

GPD identified the driver as 21-year-old Caleb Joseph Hayes of Dickinson. He is charged with driving while intoxicated, according to police.

The Coast Guard and a dive team were searching the water Sunday morning. Police said Texas Parks and Wildlife assisted in the search with more advanced equipment.

A KHOU 11 viewer captured a photo of the car being pulled from the water. Police said there was no one in the car when it was pulled out.
