CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Mother's Day is this weekend and it can be a very difficult time for parents who have lost a child.
There's a local support group that brings together grieving parents with helpful advice on how to deal with such loss from those who've been through it already.
Carol Stringer lost her 30-year-old grandson in a motorcycle accident, and another 12-year-old grandson to suicide 8 years ago.
"And then, 2 years ago when I thought, 'I can't go through this again', we lost our daughter," she said.
Through all the grief, Stringer turned to Christy Streeter, the CEO of Parents Grieving Together.
"My son Addai died five years ago. And when he died I did the right things you're supposed to do when your world falls apart," she said.
Streeter soon discovered her grief therapist had never been through the loss of a child -- prompting her to begin researching a self-treatment approach to avoid the sorrow she felt when her son was mentioned.
Streeter founded Parents Grieving Together 4 months after she moved to the Coastal Bend. In that short time, more than 400 grieving parents have reached out to her through social media to join the group.
Parents grieving together will soon sponsor 6 hour-long zoom meetings, one each night starting May 15. A day-long event will also be offered on Saturday May 20.
It's free and and any grieving parent is welcome.
"And yeah, it hurts. Every single day. Every single day I wake up and my son is no longer with us. But I just want there to be a place where parents can go and connect with people who also get it," she said.
