Many gathered to remember the legacy of Eddie Canales at his services on Saturday

He was known for his dedication and for advocating for immigrants and their rights.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Services were held Saturday at the Crystal Palace Reception Hall for Eddie Canales, founder of the South Texas Human Rights Center.

He was known for his dedication to advocating for immigrants and their rights.

Canales was diagnosed with cancer and lost the battle at the age of 76.

Mario Casarez explained how he worked on many political campaigns with Canales.

"He put his whole heart, time and effort into helping people reunite with families and have a Christian burial. He helped make sure migrants in the desert did not die from dehydration and he did it not for money but the love for humanity," Casarez said.

We were able to catch up with Yolanda Ramos Reyna, a cousin of Canales who explained how she plans to carry on his legacy.

"He was a very humble man because we knew what he was doing but we didn't know the scope of it and he was just a very giving individual. We found lots of awards and he placed them there but he was not finished with his job and so we will carry it on," said Reyna.

Reyna added that Canales is deeply missed.
