Health Officials prepare for flu season in a new way

The CDC says the 2017-2018 flu season was severe. The local health district is making sure people are prepared this year.

CORPUS CHRISTI (KIII NEWS) — Before temperatures begin to drop in the Coastal Bend and flu season begins, the Corpus Christi Public Health District is promoting the vaccine.

They're encouraging everyone, especially the elderly and children, to get the influenza vaccine. According to the Centers for Disease Control, the 2017-2018 Influenza season was severe and people need to prepare before people start getting sick.

To promote the vaccine, health officials and other organizations hosted a free vaccine clinic on Saturday. The first 80 people to attend received a free vaccine and everyone after paid 20 dollars.

"It's very important for the public because we wanna make sure we bring awareness to the flu, especially this time of year," said Antwine Charles with the Public Health District.

During the fair, there were various activities for children and their families like train rides and meeting superheroes. Charles said they also promoted the other services the district offers.

"Like the std immunization, environmental services, whenever they do diabetes treating stuff like that," Charles added.
