You might be seeing some new, furry members of HEB security teams at various stores around Corpus Christi from now on.
HEB announced Monday a new security program that will utilize Strategic Executive and Logistical security officers along with their K-9 units at stores around Corpus Christi. They made the announcement Monday morning at the HEB on Kostoryz.
The company, SEAL team, is based out of Houston. Though they are not affiliated with the U.S. Navy, they come fully equipped and ready to protect.
"We're all Level-3 Level-4 commissioned officers, meaning that we can carry firearms," said James Alexander, SEAL Director of Operations. "We also carry non-lethal tools as well. We are also K-9 officers, so that is another non-lethal tool for us to use while we're out patrolling."
The security program is in use at HEB grocery stores in San Antonio and Houston.
"Anytime we can have added security, we welcome it," CCPD Asst. Chief Michael Alanis said.
Alanis said the added security will be of great help.
"They'll be the first ones there, sometimes, so we'll rely on them and they'll rely on us," Alanis said. "If an officer is in need of help, I'm sure that SEAL will step right in and try to assist, and vice versa."
The new SEAL security team will be on the job starting Tuesday.
During the announcement, HEB also presented a check for $20,000 to the Corpus Christi Police Foundation for their help offering programs for security and safety measures in our area.
